  • Zephyrus Marine announces MOU with Mirai Ships, SHIFT and Ad Hoc to power wind service hubs in Japan

The Zephyrus Zero Carbon Offshore service operation will streamline the electric transition for Japanese offshore vessels.

April 4, 2023 –  (Vancouver/ Unceded Territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations) – Zephyrus Marine announces today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Mirai Ships, a Japan-based leading shipyard located in Miyagi prefecture, to build the Zephyrus Zero Carbon Offshore wind service vessel. Ad Hoc Marine Designs Ltd. (Ad Hoc) will be providing the design for the zero-emission Crew Transfer Vessel (“CTV”) which will incorporate Shift’s leading-edge PwrSwäp technology This class NK-approved energy storage system will allow crew transfer vessels to swap their modular battery systems with ease while providing a zero-emission service to the Japanese offshore wind sector.

The design of the Zephyrus Zero Carbon Offshore wind service operation will be tailored to specifically service Japanese wind and offshore vessels. The fully electric Mothership will operate as the hotel and charging station with fully electric daughter vessels that will either be stowed on  deck or returned to shore for near-shore operations. These daughter vessels will be lifted off the Mothership and launched into the field. When the charge is low, these CTVs will return to the Mothership to dock at the stern, allowing for the spent batteries (“e-pods”) to be lifted and replaced with fully charged ones within minutes.

Rob Stewart, Director at Zephyrus said, “We need to make it easy for shipowners and the offshore wind sector to go zero carbon. By partnering with Mirai Ships in building our unique solution, we can move the needle towards a net-zero shipping industry and we can do so while improving the operational cost and reducing the risk profiles within the offshore Japanese wind sector.”

Takeyoshi Kidoura, CEO of Mirai Ships, mentioned: “It is a great honor to become a part of this team of people who are trying to make the planet a better place to live. It is a challenge and requires dedication, passion, and, most of all, teamwork. As JFK once said, ‘Our problems are man-made; therefore, they can be solved by man. Man’s reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable. I believe they can do it again.’ I believe he was correct, and we can do this in Japan as well.”

Paul Hughes, President and founder of Shift, said: “When it comes to decarbonization, it needs to be a collaborative effort. We are thrilled to partner with Zephyrus and Mirai Ships to power these zero-emission wind service vessels. Utilizing our PwrSwäp technology, we give shipowners the power and freedom to utilize clean, reliable energy without having to purchase the energy storage system. Our energy storage systems provide the energy needed for the trip saving space, weight and costs. This is an important step towards lowering shipping emissions in Japan and beyond.”

The Zephyrus Zero Carbon Offshore wind service operation will utilize Shift’s PwrSwäp technology – a pay-as-you-go energy subscription service that delivers instant renewable, clean energy to vessels without risk. As a result, vessels can utilize only the energy they need without committing to a fixed energy storage system. The technology is rooted in a network of swappable battery e-Pods and containers which are connected through cloud-based service and management centres. Not only does PwrSwäp reduce emissions and costs, it saves time. Unlike traditional refueling which can take hours, it takes between 3-15 minutes to swap modular batteries. This addition will facilitate the transition of Japanese wind and offshore vessels to hybrid or fully electric.

John Kecsmar, Naval Architect and owner of Ad Hoc, added: “We are excited to work with the team at Zephyrus and Mirai Ships to build this unique solution for the Japanese market. This groundbreaking technology is a game changer, allowing vessels to quickly adopt electric energy while dealing with the space and weight constraints that CTVs and other smaller vessels experience when seeking a solution to reduce carbon emissions and improve operating costs. Also, teaming up with our partners at AMC is exciting, having previously shared historical roots in the same company many years ago. AMC is a trusted known builder of high-quality aluminum vessels, including ⅓ of the world’s CTVs over the last 17 years. Collaborating with Mirai Shipbuilding to bring world-class aluminum production expertise into Japan, a country known for its attention to detail and quality, by linking with Mirai Shipbuilding, serves as the perfect platform to ensure the locally built vessels for the Japanese market are built to the highest quality standards.”

This project and partnership between Zephyrus Marin, Shift, Mirai Ships, and Ad Hoc, marks an important step towards the decarbonization of the shipping industry in Japan and beyond. Zephyrus is rapidly accelerating the electrification solutions for offshore wind. With Japanese waters known for the rough seas all year around, it was a natural fit to use Ad Hoc’s SWATH CTVs, which are tailor designed to withstand such harsh annual conditions.

  • Shift Clean Energy Expands Solutions Team, Welcoming New Head of Solutions, EMENA and New Vice President of Energy Solutions

Shift Clean Energy has once again expanded its team, welcoming Lasse Agger Antonisen as its new Head of Solutions for EMENA in August, and Sietse Nap as Vice President of Energy Solutions in September.

With a wealth of experience in sales, commercial development, and marine and offshore industries, Lasse joined the team this summer as the Head of Solutions for EMENA. Lasse will be driving the development of the company’s ESS solutions, providing consultative support to Shift’s customers, and leading the solutions team itself.

“Seeing the purpose-driven model Shift has established is what makes it clear that the company will continue to be successful,” says Lasse. “Commercialism is a multi-faceted thing: it’s built on return-on-investment, longevity, business and operational needs. And in this case, regulatory requirements. This is what Shift has managed to develop, a solution which meets each of these objectives, and that has unique selling points .

“There is a lot to be done here, and I’m keen to get stuck in,  It is great to see that the internal buy-in is already there, the teams understand and care about the goal of the business. From top to bottom.”

Sietse, who joins Shift with over a decade of sales, marine and energy experience, will focus largely on the market development and adoption of PwrSwäp, the industry’s first pay-as-you-go energy subscription service. Working closely with Shift’s teams and customers in tandem, Sietse will oversee the end-to-end adoption of PwrSwäp, globally.

“What struck me the most was the product,” said Sietse. “I’ve spent time in roles where I felt less enthusiastic about the product, and what it worked towards. But with Shift, PwrSwäp is something totally new to the industry. It’s captured the need to adopt alternative energy solutions for reduced emissions, without sacrificing profits – which is the precise algorithm businesses are looking for.”

“We’re at the start of something truly exciting here. In 10 or 15 years, I want to be able to say that we’ve pioneered electrification. And I know we will do just that.”

“It’s no coincidence that Lasse and Sietse have joined us at a time of exponential growth for Shift,” said Brent Perry, CEO and co-founder of the company. “We’re seeing a vast number of businesses opt for battery technology to hybridise or fully electrify their operations. Keeping up with that level of demand requires our own operations to expand at a consistent pace. Which they are.”

News about the growing team follows Shift’s recent announcements of their growing partnership network. In the past two weeks, the company revealed its proprietary ESS technology will be used in 17 new hybrid and electric tugboats to effectively reduce emissions and harmful NOx gas, whilst continuing to support efficient operations.

It was also announced that PwrSwäp will be used to power the first all-electric battery swapping vessel, the Hydromover in the Port of Singapore, one of maritime’s leading ports – a significant step forward for battery technology and alternative energy solutions.

“We push the envelope at Shift – I think that’s always been clear. We do things differently, see things differently, grow differently from other energy providers. Lasse and Sietse fit into that need extremely well, and it’s already clear they’ll each be bringing valuable knowledge and experience to our solutions – Lasse at the helm to steer progress, and Sietse as an integral facilitator of our PwrSwäp solution.”

Welcome to both new additions to the team.

  • Shift Clean Energy’s PwrSwäp technology to be used in first all-electric vessel in one of the world’s busiest ports

The industry’s first pay-as-you-go energy subscription service streamlines the transition from diesel to electric, leading with safe and reliable clean energy storage solutions to decarbonize the marine industry, today.

September 28th, 2022 (Vancouver, Canada / Singapore) – Shift Clean Energy (Shift) today announced its involvement in the first all-electric battery swapping vessel in the Port of Singapore. The news was shared today at a keel laying ceremony, led by SeaTech Solutions International (SeaTech), Yinson GreenTech (YGT), and Goal Zero consortium members, announcing the start of construction on the first all-electric cargo vessel in the Port of Singapore – the Hydromover.

The all-electric Hydromover, owned by YGT and designed by SeaTech, will be the first to use Shift’s PwrSwäp technology, the first pay-as-you-go energy subscription-service that provides instant clean, renewable energy to ships without risk or obligations. Shift’s industry leading PwrSwäp technology streamlines the transition from diesel powered to hybrid or fully electric, changing the game for energy storage in the marine industry.

The Hydromover will be the most economical and environmentally-friendly option for cargo vessel crafts. Reducing fuel costs by approximately 77% and saving approximately 752 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the atmosphere.

Brent Perry, CEO and founder of Shift, commented: “We are thrilled to be a part of this momentous day and are honoured to be a member of the Goal Zero consortium. It’s never been more critical to decarbonize the marine industry and partnerships like these are integral to moving the needle on decarbonization. PwrSwäp’s industry leading, safe and clean technology will play a vital role in revolutionizing the operations of the harbor craft sector in the Port of Singapore and beyond and helping the maritime industry meet IMO’s greenhouse gas emission targets for 2050.”

Yinson Executive Vice President New Ventures and Technology, Mr Eirik Barclay, said: “Goal Zero is made up of like-minded and synergistic partners who are fully committed to helping the marine industry transition to net zero. Since being awarded the grant, we have achieved many important milestones, which have culminated in today’s keel laying to mark the official commencement of construction. We are very pleased with our rapid progress and are looking forward to launching our pilot vessel by the second quarter of 2023, way in advance of the original 5-year schedule planned for the program. This not only gives Goal Zero a head start to roll-out our all-electric cargo vessel, but it is also an important contribution to Singapore’s goals for all domestic harbour crafts to operate on low-carbon energy solutions by 2030 and to halve carbon emissions from these vessels by 2050.”

The Goal Zero consortium received one of the three grants awarded by Maritime Port Authority and the Singapore Maritime Institute in August 2021 to research, develop, deploy and commercialize a fully electric cargo vessel with swappable battery infrastructure solutions. Following the extensive research and design phase, the vessel will go into construction and is expected to be finalized and launched in the second quarter of 2023 and ready for commercialisation in 2024.

To date, around 100 vessels have registered interest for PwrSwäp and 12 locations are planned to open by mid-2023.
